Born and raised in Cape Town, I attended DF Malan High School, after which I studied Graphic Design at Stellenbosch University. After graduating I moved overseas for the next twelve years, living in diverse locations including London, rural Scotland, Malaysia, Texas (USA) and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Upon returning to South Africa, I raised my two children Nicola and Saskia and returned once more to Stellenbosch University, obtaining a MPhil in Translation and Interpreting Studies. I have since worked as a freelance interpreter and language consultant. In 2017, I was presented with the opportunity to rent studio space in Woodstock and return to my first love. I had been painting and creating intermittently, working in oils, charcoal, acrylics and ceramics.
I am largely a self-taught painter, underpinned by my studies in graphic design and illustration.
I draw my inspiration from memory, of places and things I have witnessed, experienced and fell in love with. My style is naive and and somewhat influenced by Magical Realism, reminiscent of Latin American art. I too have always been keenly interested in the role of the Church in the naive art of former colonies, an area of study I wish to pursue.
My current work is in acrylics, painted in reverse and “blind” on perspex. I enjoy the cognitive challenge of visualisation and construction of layers in my mind and find the creative process extremely rewarding, once I remove the front “sticker” on the perspex revealing what I have painted.
I find happiness in the creative process and I hope that thereby my art may possibly evoke the same sentiment in the viewer. Particularly in the present global atmosphere of doom and gloom.
